The Prism of Hawai'i

September 2024, 3-8

Hula-Immersion with Joanne Kealamailapakalana Parongao (Kumu Hula, Kaua'i)

The theme of this year's Hula Immersion is The Prism of Hawaii. The aim is to make this prism shine within ourselves. The aim is the further development of musicality and performative expressiveness starting from the level at which each and every individual student stands - we do not compare ourselves with each other, only against ourselves. We learn in a a space free of judgement and competition.

The prism of Hawaii is also revealed to us through film and sound recordings that we collected on our cultural trip to Kaua'i and Moloka'i last year.

Each island has its specialities, colours, plants, songs and stories - this is also part of the cultural spectrum of Hawaii. The symbols of the different islands are codified. The roots of this code go back to the time of the Hawaiian Monarchy and the sovereignty movement since its overthrow. What can we learn about it?

Our guest in this year's Hula Immersion is the hula teacher (Kumu Hula) Joanne Kealamailapakalana Parongao, who became a hula student of Roselle Keli'ihonipua Bailey as a high school student in Waimea, Kaua'i, and was a member of her performance team - with performances at the Merry Monarch Festival (Hawai'i Island) and various performances worldwide with the aim of promoting cultural exchange and cultural understanding. R. K. Bailey had decided to no longer invest time and money in competitive performances, but rather in travelling to expose her students to distant countries and cultures, where the universal powers and values of Hula radiate and sparkle again and again.
